About Under the Hood

Plastic materials and processes for under the hood applications

The interaction between man and machine has become increasingly important in the age of the smart phone, and demands for car surfaces' look, feel and usability continues to be a priority in car manufacture.
A variety of dedicated processes and technologies has been developed over the years to produce desired surface properties and create added value for the user.  Well-established are multi-component injection moulding, in-mould labelling and in-mould decoration with films and fabrics.
However new approaches are also appearing recently, not just to create decoration, but to integrate functionality into surfaces using the in-mould decoration process. Circuitry and electronics are being embedded, whereby direct interaction with a sensitive surface allows drivers to use gentle touches and waving to control consoles.  At the same time, new methods of creating protective elements of interior surfaces are coming on the market introducing scratch resistance, self-healing elements and water repellence to make finishes robust to potential damage.
European Plastics News Automotive Surfaces' Automotive Surfaces conference, held in Berlin on the 26th and 27th November, will  attract and connect OEMs, Tier 1 manufacturers and plastics companies, and examine exciting developments in the sector  as the boundaries between drivers, vehicles, and smartphones begin to dissolve.

Last year European Plastics News launched its highly successful Under the Hood conference. It returns in 2015 with even more exciting and useful content.

The trend towards plastics replacing metal in under the hood applications has gained momentum with new and improved plastics meeting industry demands of greater lightweighting and improved efficiency in today's vehicles.

Since 2008 the average vehicle has dropped 20 percent - and are using more lightweight plastics and polymer-based components to achieve this. Meanwhile, the new fuel-efficiency trend of electric power trains results in heavier cars that in turn need lighter materials to reduce weight.

Increasingly, automotive manufacturers and suppliers are using plastics in new ways to reduce vehicle weight, improve fuel efficiency and benefit from other factors including parts consolidation, cost savings, durability, corrosion resistance and sound dampening.

Under the Hood 2015 will examine:

  • Legislation and its impact
  • Lightweighting: the use of composites to achieve this and blow moulding
  • Ways to decrease costs
  • Speciality parts - special conditions for parts and processing
  • New developments in plastics hybrid metal plastic structures
  • Use of thermoplastic composites under the hood
  • How fast will technology penetrate into new engines/cars on the market?
  • Replacing PA with PP
  • How to choose the best welding process
  • Foamed polymers

If your company is involved in these areas you cannot afford to miss out on the wealth of opportunities for forward thinking and new business at Under the Hood 2015.

PLUS

New for 2015, Under the Hood will be co-located with launch conference Automotive Thermoplastic Composites 2015. Book your place today and will you be able to meet high level delegates involved in under the hood applications as well as senior delegate involved in the wider plastics market.
